A Boxborough basement that started as exposed ducts and bare concrete walls is now the family’s most-used room. Here’s how it came together.

The hidden work came first: the exposed HVAC ducts were furred out, boxed in and drywalled into a flush, smooth ceiling, and the concrete walls were framed, spray-foam insulated and boarded, turning a cold basement warm and dry.

Then the finished space came together: one stair wall was opened up with solid-wood treads and a new black railing; the entry column was split from one to two for a sense of arrival; custom built-in storage and all-house white shaker solid-core doors were added; the utilities and sump-pump closets were framed flush with wainscoting and inset shelves; and the showpiece, a media-room bar with an arched wood-slat wall, LED-lit shelves and a black stone counter. Premium vinyl plank flooring runs throughout, with baseboards, trim and casing, and whole-house paint.
