Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Boston-area homeowners. Don't see yours? Call (857) 858-2600.

How much does Fotile range hood installation cost?
It depends on the model, the duct route to the outside and your existing wiring, so we don't quote sight-unseen. We provide a free written estimate after an on-site visit. Call (857) 858-2600 or submit our form to schedule.
Are you licensed and insured in Massachusetts?
Yes. Sun Shore Construction is a registered Home Improvement Contractor in Massachusetts, licensed and fully insured. Proof is available on request.
Do you provide free estimates?
Absolutely. We offer free, no-obligation written estimates after an on-site consultation. Call (857) 858-2600 or submit our form to schedule.
What areas around Boston do you serve?
We serve Boston and 30+ surrounding communities including Cambridge, Newton, Brookline, Quincy, Lexington, Concord, Wellesley, Needham, Acton, Burlington, and more.
Does a Fotile range hood have to vent outside in Massachusetts?
Generally yes. The Massachusetts Residential Code adopts the 2021 International Residential Code, which requires kitchen range hoods to discharge outdoors through a duct that is smooth inside, airtight, has a backdraft damper and is separate from other exhaust systems — not into an attic, crawl space or other space inside the house. The duct must be galvanized steel, stainless steel or copper. The exception is a listed ductless hood installed per the manufacturer's instructions where other ventilation is provided.
Do you offer warranties on your work?
Yes. We back every project with a workmanship warranty in addition to manufacturer warranties on materials. Details provided in writing with your estimate.
Do I need make-up air for a powerful range hood?
Only in some homes. Under the 2021 code, a hood that can exhaust more than 400 CFM needs make-up air when the home has a gas, oil or wood-burning appliance inside the air barrier that is neither direct-vent nor mechanically vented. We look at this during the free on-site estimate and tell you before installation if it applies to your home.
Can you install a range hood I bought overseas?
We install U.S.-market Fotile models with UL or ETL certification. The code requires range hood fans to meet UL 507, and hoods made for the China market run on 220V and lack a U.S. listing, which can cause problems at the electrical inspection.
Are you an authorized Fotile dealer?
Yes. Sun Shore Construction is listed on FOTILE's official U.S. dealer locator as an authorized Fotile dealer and installer for Greater Boston, and we have installed more than 500 Fotile hoods over five years.
