From a Dated, Unused Basement to a Full Lower Level — Needham, MA
This Needham basement started out the way many do: a low drop ceiling, wall-to-wall carpet over bare concrete, and dated paneling that made the whole level feel closed in and unusable.
Sun Shore Construction took on the whole lower level — bathroom, bedroom area, kitchenette, hallway, storage and stairway — and turned it into space the family uses every day.
The signature move here was the ceiling: instead of putting a new drop ceiling back in the bedroom area, we removed it, painted the exposed joists black, and ran new lighting between them. That single decision bought back real headroom and gave the room an open, finished loft feel that a drop ceiling never delivers.
Project Highlights
What We Built
Basement bathroom — removed the existing wallpaper, plastered, sanded and painted the walls, and installed vinyl plank flooring that continues out into the hallway. Finished with a new vanity, countertop, faucet and toilet.
Main basement — bedroom, kitchenette, hallway and storage — removed the old drop ceiling in the bedroom area and painted the exposed joists black, installed new light fixtures throughout, pulled up the old carpet, and laid premium vinyl plank flooring across the entire level.
Kitchenette and laundry — new cabinetry with butcher-block counters, a brick-look backsplash, and upper cabinets built in above the washer and dryer.
Stairway — replaced the old wood boards with drywall, plastered, sanded and painted, then installed new stair treads and finished them.
Bedroom walls — new drywall down to the wainscotting, plastered, sanded and painted.
