Trex Composite Deck with Wraparound Steps & New Porch Door — Acton, MA
Trex Composite Deck with Wraparound Steps — Acton, MA
This Acton home already had a screened porch on the back of the house, but stepping out of it meant stepping straight down onto bare ground. The family wanted an open, low deck right next to the porch — somewhere to sit, grill and walk out onto the yard — without the upkeep of a wood deck.
Sun Shore Construction framed and built a new low-profile deck alongside the porch, finished it in Trex composite decking, and wrapped wide steps around the open sides so the deck flows down into the backyard instead of ending at a single stair.
To tie the two spaces together, we also cut a new door into the existing screened porch wall, so the porch now opens directly onto the new deck.

Project Highlights

What We Built
Deck framing — a new pressure-treated frame on short posts, set low beside the screened porch so the deck sits close to grade and stays open underneath.
Trex composite decking — grooved-edge Trex boards across the main surface, and square-edge Trex boards used as a picture-frame border around the perimeter and on the stair treads, so no cut board ends are left exposed.
Wraparound steps — instead of one narrow stair, wide steps run along the open sides of the deck, giving several easy ways down to the lawn and doubling as extra seating. Light trim boards on the risers make each step edge easy to see.
Railing — a railing with white posts and black balusters along the side where the grade drops toward the driveway, matching the trim of the house.
New screened porch door — we modified the existing screened wall, framed a new opening and installed a new screen door that swings out toward the deck, then finished the surrounding porch framing so it reads as part of the original porch.
The homeowners sourced the Trex boards themselves, and we scheduled the build around the material deliveries — framing first, then decking, steps and railing as the boards arrived. The deck was finished in early October.

Thinking About a Composite Deck?
A low deck next to a porch or patio door is one of the simplest ways to add usable outdoor space — and with composite decking there is no sanding, staining or sealing every few years. What makes it last is what is underneath: solid framing, proper footings, and boards installed with the spacing and fastening the manufacturer calls for.
If you are thinking about a new deck, a deck rebuild, or connecting a porch to the yard, we can walk the space with you and tell you honestly what it will take.
