New Walk-In Shower in a First Floor Bathroom, Needham, MA
New Walk-In Shower in a First Floor Bathroom, Needham, MA
This first floor bathroom in Needham had a toilet and a vanity but no shower.
Sun Shore Construction added a walk-in shower in the corner of the room. We opened up part of the wall and the wood floor, modified the framing, ran new hot and cold lines up from the basement, and installed a new shower valve and drain.
At the rough-in inspection, the inspector said the planned 32 x 32 inch shower base did not meet code. Instead of forcing a standard size into the corner, we made a custom 32 x 36 inch shower base on site, built to the size the inspector required and making the most of the space.

Project Highlights

What We Built
Framing and plumbing — opened part of the wall and the wood floor in the corner, modified the framing for the new shower, ran hot and cold supply lines up from the basement, and installed a new shower valve and drain.
Custom shower base — after the rough-in inspection ruled out the planned 32 x 32 inch base, we made a custom 32 x 36 inch base on site, built to the size the inspector required.
Tile — marble-look tile on the shower walls and a hexagon mosaic tile on the shower floor.
Glass and fittings — a frameless glass shower door with metal hinges and a long pull handle, glass corner shelves, and a new shower head and valve trim.
Finishing — patched and painted the walls around the new shower, and repaired the wood floor where it meets the shower.

Thinking About Adding a Shower to a First Floor Bathroom?
Many older homes in Greater Boston have a first floor half bath with no shower. Adding one is often possible without moving walls, but the details matter: where the supply lines and drain can come from, what the framing allows, and what size shower base the inspector will accept. Settle the base size before work starts, not at the inspection.
If you are thinking about the same project, we can walk the room with you and tell you honestly what it will take.
