Acton Luxury Master Bathroom Remodeling
From a Tub-and-Shower Layout to a Walk-In Shower and Freestanding Tub
- Location: Acton, MA
- Room: master bathroom
- Our work: demolition, the walk-in shower build (base, waterproofing, cement board, tile, niche, curb), large-format wall and floor tile, the freestanding tub placement, the vanity, a pocket door, a small linen closet, and paint on the ceiling, doors and trim
- Electrical, plumbing and the glass enclosure on this job were done outside our contract
What the homeowners wanted
The old room had a tub and a separate walk-in shower. The plan was a new walk-in shower, a freestanding tub near the window for natural light, and more storage. Swapping the swinging entry door for a pocket door freed up floor space.

What We Did
Opened the room to the studs. We removed the old tub, shower, wall and floor tile, vanity and fixtures, taking the walls down to the framing.
Built the shower from the base up. The shower sits on a sloped mortar base under a Schluter KERDI waterproofing membrane, with USG Durock cement board on the walls and waterproofing over the full wall surface. The waterproofing is continuous from floor to walls before any tile goes on, which is the part you can’t fix later without tearing the shower out.
Tile, niche and curb. The bathroom walls are 24×48 large-format tile, run up to the ceiling, with large tile on the bathroom floor as well. The shower floor is small mosaic tile, and a niche was added inside the shower. The shower has a low marble curb at the entry.
Freestanding tub near the window. The tub was set near the window for natural light.
Vanity, pocket door and storage. A floating double vanity with wood-front drawers, a pocket door at the entry in place of the old swinging door, and a small linen closet next to the shower.
Finishing. Accessories such as towel holders and a toilet paper holder, plus fresh paint on the ceiling, doors and trim.
How it looks now: a frameless glass enclosure on the curb, brushed gold fixtures, a ceiling-mounted rain head with a handheld on a slide bar and a digital shower control, a floor-mounted tub filler, and sconces beside the mirrors. The glass, those fixtures and the wiring and piping behind them were installed under separate contracts.
If you’re planning something similar
- Decide early where the tub goes. Moving a freestanding tub to a window changes where the drain and supply lines run, so it belongs in the plan from day one, even when a separate plumber does that part.
- Ask how the shower will be waterproofed. A membrane system over a mortar base or a pre-formed pan both work. What matters is that the waterproofing is continuous and done before tile.
- Pocket doors need an open wall. They’re easiest to add when the wall is already open for the remodel.
